Dear ACLU-NC Supporter, Thank you for your continued support of police accountability through SB 1019! As a result of your efforts to secure support from legislators around the state, the California State Senate passed this bill and made a resounding statement about the importance of civilian oversight of police agencies. Now, this crucial bill is being heard in the Assembly Public Safety Committee next Tuesday, June 26. Assemblymembers Fiona Ma and Greg Aghazarian are the only members on this committee from the northern California region. Both have been getting a lot of pressure from opponents of SB 1019. With only a few days left to make up their minds, they need to hear from people like you who support the bill. California has a long and proud tradition of civilian oversight of police conduct and transparency in government. Unless we pass SB 1019, all records and hearings of police misconduct will remain closed to the public (as you know, access to these records was shut off by the recent Supreme Court decision in Copley; SB 1019 restores such access). Take action now! Tell Assemblymembers Ma and Aghazarian that restoring public oversight and reopening records of police misconduct are simply good public policy and good governance. Urge them to join the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, the Libertarian Party of California, San Francisco Sheriff Michael Hennessey, Assembly member Mark Leno, Los Angeles Police Chief William Bratton, and Senators Leland Yee (D), Carole Migden (D), Tom McClintock (R) and Bob Margett (R), and others in supporting the public interest and police transparency.
Sincerely, | ||||||
